  • Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart

From "Sketch of Samuel Rutherford" by Andrew A. Bonar:

He [Rutherford] dealt with individual parishioners so closely and so personally as to be able to appeal to them regarding his faithfulness in this matter.  He addresses one of them, Jean McMillan: "I did what I could to put you within the grips of Christ; I told you Christ's testament and latter-will plainly."  He so carried them on his heart (like the priest with the twelve tribes on his breastplate), that he could declare to Gordon of Cardoness, "Thoughts of your soul depart not from me in my sleep." "My soul was taken up when others were sleeping, how to have Christ betrothed with a bride in that part of the land," vix. Anwoth [his pastorate]. He so prayed over them and for them, that he fears not to say, "There I wrestled with the angel and prevailed. Woods, trees, meadows, and hills, are my witnesses that I drew on a fair match betwixt Christ and Anwoth."

O, Lord God, Great Shepherd of the sheep,

We are Your people, the sheep of Your pasture. We confess we are nothing and we have nothing apart from Your sovereign grace and love set on us. We were sheep all gone astray and You laid our iniquity on Jesus Christ, the Lamb, so we might be reconciled to You.

We come to You in Jesus' blessed and holy Name alone. We have no other appeal and can make no other appeal to You but through Him and through His body and His blood given for us. Be gracious to us for Jesus' sake. We come empty handed and ask You to strengthen us for the work You have called us to do, the work of shepherding and interceding for Your people. We know we are not sufficient for these things. O, Lord God, be our sufficiency and our strength and our portion.

We come before you because You have given us a heart for You and for Your Gospel and for Your Church, Your flock. You have given us a strong desire and passionate heart to see Your people (and ourselves) renewed and set aflame once again. We know there is no hope for ourselves or for Your Church as a whole apart from Your Spirit coming down afresh on us and reviving us again.

Yet now we confess that our love for You and for the flock is often lukewarm or even cold. Our love is not steady and sure and bright and shining constantly as Your love is for us. We confess we do not walk steadfastly in the calling You have called us to. We know this grieves You.

    Forgive us, O Lord God.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us, by Your Spirit. O, stir up our hearts and minds and wills. O, we confess we are in need of endurance. Empower us, fill us up with You, so we might be faithful to those you have entrusted to us, as You are ever faithful to us. Impart to us a love for the flock like You have for us. Help us to know the breadth and length and height and depth of Your love for us.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. O, may we serve others in love through our prayers, our words and our deeds, so we might not faint, so we might persevere in all we can to put others within the grips of Christ. We so long to see them in your grip, even as we know we are needing to be continuing to place ourselves one again in your grip and at your whole disposal to do with us as You will. We confess how we so often chafe at Your easy yoke. Forgive us, O Lord.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. We confess we have no message of our own, You alone have the words of eternal life. Supply the words we need and speak through us, to tell others of Christ's testament and latter-will plainly. Let us not shrink back from speaking Your Word. Your Word is truth. Your Church is sanctified as Your truth is proclaimed. May we never be fearful of men but fear You alone. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so we might proclaim Your Word with boldness, assurance and power, so many lives would be arrested with Your glory and Your grace and brought into Your Kingdom light and freedom.

Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. O, how we need You to carry us, we have no strength in and of ourselves. You alone are our strength. Strengthen us with Your resurrection power to carry on our hearts (like the priest with the twelve tribes on his breastplate) the sheep you have entrusted to us. We confess we need You to carry us so we might carry the dear lambs. Give us a greater love for the sheep; give us an increased burden for Your people, so we cannot come to Your throne without bringing them with us, but we will feel unclothed and naked before You apart from bringing them with us there.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. You are the one who never sleeps or slumbers. You are the One who ever lives to interecede at the throne of grace, O grant that our hearts might be knit with Yours at the right hand of the Father so we might be in continuing intercession for the sheep of our flocks, Your sheep, Your flock, purchased with the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Our spirits are willing but our flesh is weak. O strengthen us, eternal and everlasting God with Your Holy Spirit to endure to the end, to continue steadfast in prayer for Your Church.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. O, we so long to see Christ exalted and given His proper place, to have Christ betrothed with a bride in our various towns and cities. We have seen how Your Church continues to balk at Your headship. We confess we ourselves have continued to balk at Your headship. Forgive us, O Lord. Until You are given Your rightful place, given the preeminence, we cannot expect You to bless us. Help us to bend our necks and bow our knees to Your sovereign Lordship, for You alone are our King and Lord.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

O, Lord, our Good Shepherd, strengthen us by Your Spirit. O, strengthen us to wrestle with the angel until You bless us. Let us persevere. Let us not faint. We know You have called us to this ministry of prayer and are trusting You to keep us on the watchtower, to keep us approaching Your throne of grace, to keep us prostrating before You, O Lord. Keep us marching around the walls that must come down. Keep us building the walls that must be erected. God forbid that we fail to pray for Your flock. Forgive us for the times we have left off in prayer. You never fail to intercede for us. Impart to us by Your Spirit all we need to continue wrestling and seeking Your face in prayer. We are asking these things for the sake of and the honor of Your blessed Name. O, come again and bless Your people, so we might bless You in this world, so we might reflect You and show the world You and Your glory, so we might be a praise in the earth.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

    Lord, have mercy on us.
Make us shepherds & intercessors after Your own heart.

Please add your prayers as His Holy Spirit leads you.

  • What is the state of our adoration?

...you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, Abba! Father!
    –Romans 8:15b

    Abba! Father!

During the Christmas season we have sung, "O Come, let us adore Him," but what is our adoration really like?

Is our adoration wholehearted – or is it half-hearted?

Is our adoration hot – or it is cold or lukewarm?

Is our adoration constant – or is it fitful?

Is our adoration independent of circumstances – or dependent on circumstances?

Is our adoration unreserved – or reserved?

Is our adoration generous – or frugal?

Is our adoration heart-felt – or routine?

Is our adoration vulnerable – or protective?

Is our adoration unconditional – or conditional?

Is our adoration loving – or legalistic?

Is our adoration joyful – or joyless?

Is our adoration genuine – or feigned?

O, Lord God, You are worthy of perfect and unsurpassed adoration. Grant us grace to examine ourselves. Increase our love for You, O Lord.

    Amen.

  • appealing to the zeal of the LORD of hosts

    Isaiah 9:7

Of the increase of his government and of peace
    there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
    with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

    Lord of heaven
    Lord of earth
    Lord of the church
    Lord of all

    You are everlasting
    You always were
    You always are
    You always shall be
    We are but a vapor
    We are but the branches
Apart from You we are nothing
Apart from You we can do nothing

You sent Your only begotten Son to fulfill the very words Isaiah spoke hundreds of years beforehand
Jesus Christ came of the line of David, yet born of the Holy Spirit in the virgin womb
    fully God and fully man
through Whom Your Kingdom came to earth
    the King came to earth
    the King of kings

You have promised of the increase of His government there will be no end
You have promised of the increase of His peace there will be no end
You have come to rule in human hearts by Your Spirit
You have come to bring peace to men through Your blood

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

You have established your Kingdom here
Yet Your kingdom is not of this world
Your kingdom is within us who believe
We are Your chosen people in whom You have put Your Spirit

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

We are a kingdom of priests, a holy nation
Now we are asking that You keep Your promise
Now we are asking that You uphold the Kingdom You have established in us

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

We have no power of ourselves to be Kingdom people
We look at ourselves and see we are so far from the Kingdom You intended.
Forgive us our sins, O Lord of hosts.
    Conform us into Your image.

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

You have birthed Your people by Your incorruptible seed
Apart from You we were not a people,
but now by Your grace we are Your people

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

You have imparted to Your people Your everlasting life
Apart from You we had no life
but now by Your grace we have everlasting life

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

You have promised to sustain Your people by Your life
You are the beginning and You are the ending
and now by Your grace You are upholding us by the word of Your power

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

You are the alpha and You are the omega
We have no beginning and we have no life
apart from Your sovereign grace breathing life into us

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

You are the author and You are the perfecter
We have no story and we have no faith
apart from Your sovereign grace intervening in our stories

Lord of hosts, we praise Your holy name
    Your zeal has done this

    Lord of hosts,
We are strangers and aliens here
    Sustain and uphold us
    Carry and strengthen us
    By Your resurrection power
For the pilgrim journey that yet lies ahead for us

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

    We are Your new creation
Ordained to walk in good works
    Sanctify and purify us
    Complete and finish in us
The work You have begun in us

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

    We are Your ambassadors
    Fill and empower us
    Anoint and embolden us
Send us out into the world
As You sent Your Son into the world

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

We are ministers of New Covenant glory
    not sufficient of ourselves
may Your grace toward us not be in vain
    but let us work harder
yet not us but Your grace in us

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

We are stewards of Your Gospel
the power of God to those who believe
    may we guard it carefully
    may we proclaim it boldly
may we never be ashamed of it or of You

Lord of hosts, we appeal to You, to Your zeal
Surely the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

    Amen.

As His Holy Spirit leads you, please add your prayers to the Lord of hosts...

  • Has the fullness of time not yet come?

In the same way we also, when we were children, were enslaved to the elementary principles of the world. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son . . . Galatians 4:3-4a

    Our Father,

We confess we have once again become children.

We drink milk when we should be eating meat.

We are unwise as to what is good and infants regarding evil.

We build on sand rather than on the Rock.

We are withering instead of abiding in the Vine and bearing fruit.

We each do what is right in his his eyes rather than what is right in Your eyes.

We trust in our own wisdom rather than You.

We rely on our own might rather than You.

We make our own plans and ask You to bless them.

We walk in the broad way of the world rather than the narrow way of Life.

We confessing You as Lord but not making You Lord.

We confess we have become enslaved to the world and to our flesh.

Holy Father, when the fullness of time had come You sent Your only begotten Son...

After the Lord Jesus Christ lived a holy life here, coming not to be served but to serve, wholly submitting Himself to Your will for Him, having finished the work You had sent Him to do, He was crucified, died and was buried. Then He was raised from the dead and declared to be Your Son with power. After His ascension to Your right hand in glory, You did not leave us as orphans, but Your Spirit was sent to dwell with us forever.

We confess how we have continued to grieve, quench and limit Your Holy Spirit.

We confess how we have once again become children.

Forgive us, O Father, for Jesus' sake. Cleanse us, O Father, for Jesus' sake.

Now we ask You humbly, yet boldly, for what You have told us to ask for...no — for Whom You have told us to ask...

Father, You have promised us You would send Your Holy Spirit to Your children who ask You.

So we are coming to ask You. Yes, we know we have Your Spirit indwelling us, but yet we are asking. Asking for a fresh infilling. You have told us to be filled with the Spirit. We cannot fill ourselves. We cannot make this happen, but we can ask. We cannot manipulate You, but we can ask. We have seen how You have blessed Your people in the past by the sovereign movement of Your Spirit not only in individual lives, but in large numbers of people, when the Church was at her lowest, Your sovereign Spirit came to breathe life into the dead Church and revive her.

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

O, Holy Father, do You not see the state of Your Church. We are grieved when we see how we are falling so short of Your glory. Are You not even more grieved?

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

You are our Father. We are Your children. We bow before You, yet we come knowing You will hear us as we ask in the Name of Jesus. Will You not freely give us all things? Have You not promised to give Your Holy Spirit to those who ask You. So, here we are, lying at Your throne and begging of You. Our hands are empty. Our mouths are empty. We have nothing apart from You. We are nothing apart from You. Will You not look with pity on us? We are Your children. Do You not hear our groaning? Is not Your Spirit groaning along with us? O, Father, remember the new covenant You have made with us through Your only begotten Son. We are Yours.

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

We have seen how we have become children in so many ways.

How childish and immature we are. How lukewarm and apathetic we are. How powerless and ineffective we are.

You have called us to be holy. You have called us to be bold. You have called us to turn the world upside down. We are failing. The fault lies wholly with us, not with You.

Forgive us, O Father, for making a mockery of Your love for us.
Forgive us, O Son, for showing contempt for Your blood shed for us.
Forgive us, O Spirit, for limiting Your work in us.

We have seen that we have no other recourse but to call on You. We can do nothing apart from You. We can do nothing to revive ourselves. What has been begun by Your Spirit can only be continued and brought to full fruition by Your Spirit. Will You leave us as we are?

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

Can we continue to be childish? Can we continue to be immature? Can we continue to be lukewarm? Can we continue to be apathetic. Can we continue to be powerless? Can we continue to be ineffective?

We are groaning. We are crying out to You. Are You not the God who sees and hears us? Will You not have mercy on us and be gracious to us for the sake of Your Name?

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

Father, we are desperate here. How can our childishness and immaturity bring You glory? How can our lukewarmness and apathy bring You glory? How can our powerlessness and ineffectiveness bring You glory?

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

For the sake of Your blessed and holy and pure and wonderful Name, will You not look with favor on us, because we are Your children, because we are Your sheep, because we are Yours bought with the blood of Your Son and once again do a mighty thing like You did by sending Your Son. Send Your Spirit once more, O Father, so we might bring You glory and honor and praise as You have intended. Revive us, Almighty God. We have no ability, we have no passion, we have no power apart from You. Breathe into our dry bones.

    Come again to us.

    To refresh what is arid.

    To renew what is weak.

    To restore what is decayed.

    To revive what is unconscious.

    To resurrect what is dead.

    To rebuild what is wrecked.

    To reclaim what is ravaged.

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

Holy Father, have mercy on us and be gracious to us for Jesus' sake. We know we do not deserve anything except through our Mediator. We come in His blessed Name, through His Body and Blood, to Your throne. You have told us to come in our time of need. Is this not a great time of need?

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

We are poor and needy. We no longer what to remain in the pig sty. We are coming home, Father. Look with favor on us for Jesus' sake. We are Your adopted children. Will you not send Your Spirit to us? We know we cannot continue on as we are.

Father, look on us, be merciful to us, hear our prayers for Your Name sake. Make us a praise in the earth. Make us the shining city on a hill You have intended us to be.

Has the fullness of time not yet come?

Please add your prayers for the Holy Spirit to come and revive you and the Church as He leads you...

  • Prayer for Revival (a prayer by quest4god)

About a week ago I mentioned I was taking a break from posting here...which I still am...

However, yesterday one of my brothers in Christ,
quest4god (Norm), posted a wonderful prayer on his site here and he has given me permission to post it here as well...

Let us continue to go to together to our Father's throne through the blood of Jesus with a holy boldness and continue to persevere in prayer and ask Him to be merciful to us and revive us again.

    ~Karen

    Prayer For Revival

    One Thing I Ask

    One thing I ask:
To dwell in the house of the Lord all my days,
    To gaze on His goodness
    And walk in His ways.

    He will shelter me;
    He will be my strength.
In the triumph that He brings me
I can hold my head high.

In His house I shall lift up my voice.
I will sing, I will praise the Lord.

    One thing I ask:
To dwell in the house of the Lord all my days,
    To gaze on His goodness
    And walk in His ways.
    Amen.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ are you among those in whom God is bringing a fresh awareness of your need for revival - to be restored, even raised above where you once were with the Lord?  Is He calling you to remember your first love?  This is the case with me.  He has clearly stated that my (our) lukewarmness doesn't please Him at all....If you are in this same distress over your spiritual condition as I am, please read this prayer and pray it as your own:

My dear Lord Jesus I come to you now to be restored in you, to be renewed in you, to receive your love and your life, and all the grace and mercy I so desperately need this day. I honor you as my Sovereign, and I surrender every aspect of my life totally and completely to you. I give you my spirit, soul and body, my heart, mind, and will. I cover myself with your blood—my spirit, soul, and body, my heart, mind and will. I ask your Holy Spirit to restore me in you, renew me in you, and to lead me in this time of prayer. In all that I now pray, I stand in total agreement with your Spirit, and with my intercessors and allies, by your Spirit alone.

I now pray, I include my wife and children.  Acting as their head, I bring them under your authority and covering, as I come under your authority and covering. I cover them your blood – their spirit, soul and body, their heart, mind and will. I ask your Spirit to restore them in you, renew them in you, and apply to them all that I now pray on their behalf, acting as their head.  I pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ, those whom you've called, those in whom you have placed the desire for more of You.  My prayer for the family of God is that we may see you in all your glory.  Open the eyes of our hearts, Lord, that we may desire you alone, and that in our zeal for you that we would be bold to proclaim your kingdom and your righteousness  - the gospel - to this fallen world.

Dear God, holy and victorious Trinity, you alone are worthy of all my worship, my heart’s devotion, all my praise, all my trust and all the glory of my life. I love you, I worship you, I trust you. I give myself over to you in my heart’s search for life. You alone are Life, and you have become my life. I renounce all other gods, all idols, and I give you the place in my heart and in my life that you truly deserve. I confess here and now that this is all about you, God, and not about me. You are the Hero of this story, and I belong to you. Forgive me for my every sin. Search me and know me and reveal to me where you are working in my life, and grant to me the grace of your healing and deliverance, and a deep and true repentance.

Heavenly Father, thank you for loving me and choosing me before you made the world. You are my true Father—my Creator, my Redeemer, my Sustainer, and the true end of all things, including my life. I love you, I trust you, I worship you. I give myself over to you to be one with you in all things, as Jesus is one with you. Thank you for proving your love by sending Jesus. I receive him and all his life and all his work, which you ordained for me. Thank you for including me in Christ, for forgiving me my sins, for granting me his righteousness, for making me complete in him. Thank you for making me alive with Christ, raising me with him, seating me with him at your right hand, establishing me in his authority, and anointing me with your Holy Spirit, your love and your favor. I receive it all with thanks and give it total claim to my life—my spirit, soul, and body, my heart, mind and will. I bring the life and the work of Jesus over all you've entrusted to me...all my kingdom and domain.

Jesus, thank you for coming to ransom me with your own life. I love you, I worship you, I trust you. I give myself over to you, to be one with you in all things. And I receive all the work and all of the triumph of your cross, death, blood and sacrifice for me, through which I am atoned for, I am ransomed and transferred to your kingdom, my heart is circumcised unto God, and every claim made against me is disarmed this day. I now take my place in your cross and death, through which I have died with you to sin, to my flesh, to the world, and to the evil one. I take up the cross and crucify my flesh with all its pride, arrogance, unbelief, idolatry, and lust. I put off the old man. I ask you to apply to me the fullness of your cross, death, blood and sacrifice. I receive it with thanks and give it total claim to my spirit, soul and body, my heart, mind and will.

Jesus, I also sincerely receive you as my life, my holiness and strength, and I receive all the work and triumph of your resurrection, through which you have conquered sin and death and judgment. Death has no mastery over you, nor does any foul thing. And I have been raised with you to a new life, to live your life – dead to sin and alive to God. I now take my place in your resurrection and in your life, through which I am saved by your life. I reign in life through your life. I receive your life – your humility, love and forgiveness, your integrity in all things, your wisdom, discernment, your strength, your joy, your union with the Father. Apply to me the fullness of your resurrection. I receive it with thanks and give it total claim to my spirit, soul and body, my heart, mind and will.

Jesus, I also sincerely receive you as my authority, rule, and dominion, my everlasting victory against Satan and his kingdom, and my ability to bring your Kingdom at all times and in every way. I receive all the work and triumph of your ascension, through which you have judged Satan and cast him down, you have disarmed his kingdom. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to you, Jesus. All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to you, and you are worthy to receive all glory and honor, power and dominion, now and forevermore. And I have been given fullness in you, in your authority. I now take my place in your ascension, and in your throne, through which I have been raised with you to the right hand of the Father and established in your authority. I now bring the kingdom of God, and the authority, rule and dominion of Jesus Christ over my life today, over my home, my household, my vehicles and finances, over all my kingdom and domain.

I now bring the authority, rule and dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the fullness of the work of Christ, against Satan, against his kingdom, against every foul and unclean spirit which tries to come against me.  I claim the full work of Jesus Christ against every foul power and black art, against every principality and their warfare. I bind them all from me in the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ and in his Name.

Holy Spirit, thank you for coming. I love you, I worship you, I trust you. I sincerely receive you and all the work and victory in Pentecost, through which you have come, you have clothed me with power from on high, sealed me in Christ. You have become my union with the Father and the Son, become the Spirit of truth in me, the life of God in me, my Counselor, Comforter, Strength, and Guide. I honor you as my Sovereign, and I yield every dimension of my spirit, soul and body, my heart, mind and will to you and you alone, to be filled with you, to walk in step with you in all things. Fill me afresh. Restore my union with the Father and the Son. Lead me in all truth, anoint me for all of my life and walk and calling, and lead me deeper into Jesus today. I receive you with thanks, and I give you total claim to my life.

Heavenly Father, thank you for granting to me every spiritual blessing in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus. I claim the riches in Christ Jesus over my life today, my home, my kingdom and domain. I bring the blood of Christ over my spirit, soul, and body, my heart, mind and will. I put on the full armor of God – the belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel, helmet of salvation. I take up the shield of faith and sword of the Spirit, and I choose to wield these weapons at all times in the power of God. I choose to pray at all times in the Spirit.  I join now with all the saints and angels in praise and adoration!  Thank you, my Sovereign God, Lover of my soul, Most Beautiful Lord!

In the Name of Him who loved me and gave Himself for me, Jesus Christ my Lord.  Amen!

Brothers and sisters, please add your own prayers for revival as the Holy Spirit leads you...
