“And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.
13 “‘I know where you dwell, where Satan's throne is. Yet you hold fast my name, and you did not deny my faith even in the days of Antipas my faithful witness, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
14 But I have a few things against you: you have some there who hold the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, so that they might eat food sacrificed to idols and practice sexual immorality.
15 So also you have some who hold the teaching of the Nicolaitans.
16 Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth.
17 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.
18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze.
19 “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first.
20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols.
21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.
22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works,
23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you as your works deserve.
24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden.
When you are encamped against your enemies, then you shall keep yourself from every evil thing...
Because the LORD your God walks in the midst of your camp, to deliver you and to give up your enemies before you, therefore your camp must be holy, so that he may not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you.
But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: The Lord knows those who are his, and, Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.
20 Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable.
21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.
Holy One of Israel,
As Your people, bought by the blood of the spotless Lamb without blemish and sealed with Your Holy Spirit, we confess we have not kept ourselves from evil thing. Your call to us today is no different than your call to Your people throughout the ages.
10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
11 Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.
12 Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.
We confess we like the idea we are chosen, we like the privileges we get with our salvation but we confess we too easily forget the calling and responsibilities we have. We live our lives with disregard to Your call to be holy. But You have chosen to be holy, to be a blessing to You and a praise and glory to Your Name throughout the earth. You have chosen us to a be a holy nation, a people set apart, to shine like the sun right here and now. To be salt in a tasteless world. We are to shine as lights in the world. We are to hold fast the Word of life.
Forgive us that we have compromised our testimony time and again. We are to be in the world but not live like the world. You have made a difference between us and the world, You have placed within us Your Holy Spirit, so we might be sanctified and set apart from the world, to keep ourselves form every evil thing, yet how often do we live no differently than the world.
We confess our light is dim and all but snuffed out.
We confess our salt has lost its flavor and about to be trampled.
We confess we have not held fast the Word of life.
We have sinned against You in word and deed. In doctrine and practice we have not been holy. We have compromised again and again. And now we are seeing the fruits of this, both in our own personal lives, our nation and in the church. We are in danger of having you take away our lampstand unless we repent.
Have mercy on us, O Father. Has not Your Holy Spirit shown us these things so we might repent? We come to You and ask forgiveness, no we beg forgiveness, for we have nothing to commend us to You, we have known to do good and not done it. We have sinned against You, our merciful Redeemer. How can we have done that? No, we can only appeal to You through the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Holy Son. Will You not have mercy on us, for Your Son's sake? Will You not come and sweep in us and clean house, purify Your people, Your Church, so we might be a glory and praise on the earth once more? Come, Holy Spirit, to sanctify us once more. We have seen our sin before You. We confess before You today we not kept ourselves from every evil thing.
Like the churches at Pergamum and Thyatira, we have sinned against You. We have compromised. We have lived corruptly. We have not held fast to the Truth. We have not lived holy lives. Forgive us, O God. Have mercy on us, O loving Father, who sent Your Son to die for us while we were yet sinners. Return to us once more and shine Your face upon us. Rend the heavens and come down and cleanse and purify us. Make us holy. Revive us, O Holy One of Israel.
We confess we have no excuse for living like we have done. We have been given Your Holy Spirit, the life of Your Son within us, so we might be holiness to the Lord, to be the holy people You have called us to be. Your commandments are not burdensome to us because with Your commands You always give us the power to fulfill them.
When You call us to keep ourselves from evil thing, You mean it.
When You call us to keep ourselves from evil thing, You give us the power to do just that.
Forgive us, O Holy God, we have sinned against You. We have received Your grace, yet time and again we have showed contempt for the wonderful cross and blood which bought us and delivered us from hell.
Holy Spirit, You dwell in us to make us holy. Holy Spirit, renew our minds, so we might have an ever-increasing desire for holiness. Holy Spirit, work in us to make us Holy as You are holy. Holy Spirit, work in us a desire to cleanse and purify ourselves as You are clean and pure and holy. Holy Spirit, help us not to quench or grieve You so we might live as the holy people our Father has called us out to be. Holy Spirit, make us holy. Holy Spirit, work in us so we might keep ourselves from every evil thing.
Have mercy on us, O God. Return once more and walk among us. We are Your people. Your covenant with us in Christ is sure. We confess we cannot go on from here without You. Purify us, O God. Rend the heavens and send Your glory among us once more. Right now the glory has departed. Show us Your glory once more. Come into our midst and walk with us once more.
We know we come to You not on our own merits, for we are unworthy and undeserving of anything from Your hand, but we come boldly and with assurance through the torn body and shed blood of Your holy Son Jesus Christ. We come to You as His joint heirs, as Your children, O Father, ask for mercy and grace to help us now in this time of need. Our need is great, O God. Be merciful and gracious to us. We are Your people, the sheep of Your pasture. Do not treat us as our sins deserve. Revive us, O God. We are nothing apart from Your strong arm and mighty hand coming down upon us. Yet we know Your arm is not shortened that You cannot save! Revive Your Church so You might be glorified once more. Spotless Lamb, sanctify us, come and wash us with the water of Your Word so we might be a glorious Church, without spot or wrinkle, holy and without blemish.
Amen.
