preaching

  • "And there was very great rejoicing." (the doctrine of assurance : Nehemiah 8:8-18)

I've been focusing over the past few weeks on Nehemiah 8 and 9 and have been leading us in prayers that God's Holy Spirit might work in His people a greater desire for the Lord and His Word and for God to send us His servants to preach and teach the Word of God uncompromisingly and clearly, with Holy Spirit authority, power and boldness.

As the Word of God is preached in the power of God, the Holy Spirit will convict men of sin, but for those who are in Jesus Christ there is no condemnation. Today I'm going to touch a little on the confession and repentance that will come as a result of the Holy Spirit's work through the preaching the Word, but for today I would like to focus more on the gift of assurance God makes available to those who are in Christ. In a future post, I hope to look at Nehemiah and reflect more on confession and repentance of sin at that time.

Nehemiah 8:8  They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

9  And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep.” For all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law. 10  Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” 11  So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.” 12  And all the people went their way to eat and drink and to send portions and to make great rejoicing, because they had understood the words that were declared to them.

    Holy God,

Right preaching, teaching and understanding of Your Word come through Your Holy Spirit, and as Your Spirit moves, we will experience grief, weeping, confession and repentance over our sin and our sinfulness, much like the Israelites did here. After all, Your Spirit is Holy and Your desire for us is to be a holy nation. After all, You loved us so much that You sent Your Son to die for our sin so we might be reconciled to You. Apart from Your provision for us in Christ, we would remain separated from You, but now we are Yours, fully justified in Your sight by Christ's blood and being sanctified through Christ's Spirit. We praise You that in Your great love toward us, Your manifold mercies and You sovereign grace, You called us out of the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Light, and You gave us ears to hear and hearts to respond to Your call, so we might be saved and become Your children.

In a similar manner, we see Israel responding in weeping and grief as they heard Your Word. We see how they were convicted of their sin and their sinfulness. Not long after this (Nehemiah 9) we see Your appointed leaders leading Your people in corporate confession of sin. We thank You that we see these responses here as well as elsewhere in Your Word. May we never shrink back from preaching Your Word, all of Your Word, including the clear teaching of Your holiness and Your call to holiness, confession and repentance of our sin. A true understanding of You and Your Word will produce true confession of sin which will bear fruits worthy of repentance.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is a Gospel not only of remission of sins but also of repentance (Luke 24:44-49). We praise You, O God, for Your kindness that has led us to repentance. Apart from Your turning us toward You, we could never turn to You.

Yet, Holy Father, we see how Israel was not supposed to grieve that same day, and then again the second day they were to begin the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. After the grief and weeping here it would make sense for us to go to Nehemiah 9 and say, "Now here's the full-blown confession and repentance of sin," but that's not what we have here.

The first thing we see right after the grief, mourning and brokenness over sin is Your directing Your leaders to help Your people to rejoice in You and Your goodness to them. They were reminded the joy of the Lord was their strength. They were to celebrate Your provision by sharing with others. And during the Feast of Tabernacles they were to commemorate how You were faithful to provide for them in the wilderness. There's a clear affirmation that though all of us have sinned, though all of us deserve to be condemned, though none of us deserves anything (not even a crumb) from Your gracious and merciful hand, though we were not worthy to be children of God, yet You have loved us because You loved us. O, yes, we have greatly sinned, but we do have great cause for rejoicing! You died for us while we were yet sinners, and You made us children of God. We praise You that in Jesus Christ there is complete forgiveness and cleansing, there is no condemnation for those who are God's elect through Your covenant mercies showered down on us in Jesus Christ. It is finished!

Lord God, may all of us come to a greater understanding of the precious gift of full assurance of forgiveness and cleansing of sins for all who have come by grace through faith to believe Your Son is the propitiation for our sins – all our sins: past, present and future. Christ was condemned in our place for our sin, so we might be set free from the penalty and power of sin as well as the guilt of sin to be free to live lives holy to You. Yes, we should and must be grieved over and confess and repent of our sin, not only at our conversion but throughout all our lives. Yes, we must be seeking to be holy as You are holy, for Your will for us is sanctification and without holiness we cannot see You. God forbid we would presume upon Your mercies and trample upon Christ's blood and be deceived and believe we can remain in sin so grace might abound. Protect us from turning Your grace into licentiousness. Yes, we need to be on guard against sin, putting off our sin and putting on Christ. Yet we so desire You would show us the joy and peace You want us to have who have trusted in Christ. O, that we might truly know the breadth and length and depth and height of Your love for us in Jesus Christ. O, that we might know the freedom we have in Christ not only in our heads but also in our hearts. May Your joy be our strength!

Lord God, send us pastors and teachers after Your own heart, those who have been broken by You and have wept in true contrition over their sin and sinfulness and have come to receive the gift of joy of Your salvation. We are distressed when people try to keep Your flock bound and held captive by stirring up false guilt over their sin rather than reassuring them of the all-sufficient work of Christ on their behalf. We are distressed when there is more emphasis on works rather than grace. We are distressed when the gift of salvation is distorted into a quid pro quo. We are distressed when we see Christians who have not known the joy of their salvation. Raise up for us pastors and teachers who will remind us of the boldness, assurance and confidence that is available to all of us who are in Christ Jesus. Jesus' desire is that our joy be full, but how can our joy be full if we never hear that there is forgiveness full and free in Jesus Christ? How can the good news really be good if Christ did not pay the penalty for our sin once for all? How many good works do we have to do to atone for our sin? Chief Shepherd, look with favor on us and guard and protect us from such teachers. May we each be able to rest completely in Your gift of salvation in Jesus Christ. Yes, we must be grieved over our sin and confess it. Yes, we must be walking in good works. Yes, we must be working out our salvation with fear and trembling, but our works will not save us, but such works will grow as fruit of a regenerate heart; they will the evidence of the new life You have imparted to us in Jesus Christ.

We see that after the great conviction of sin, there was very great rejoicing! Very great!

13  On the second day the heads of fathers' houses of all the people, with the priests and the Levites, came together to Ezra the scribe in order to study the words of the Law. 14  And they found it written in the Law that the LORD had commanded by Moses that the people of Israel should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, 15  and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.” 16  So the people went out and brought them and made booths for themselves, each on his roof, and in their courts and in the courts of the house of God, and in the square at the Water Gate and in the square at the Gate of Ephraim. 17  And all the assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and lived in the booths, for from the days of Jeshua the son of Nun to that day the people of Israel had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. 18  And day by day, from the first day to the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. They kept the feast seven days . . .

O, certainly there can and should be very great rejoicing in the Christian life. Very great! Yes, we should and must very greatly mourn and weep over our sin, because we have sinned greatly...yet You did a very great thing for us in providing atonement for our sin through Jesus Christ and then imputing Christ's righteousness to us by faith! A very great thing! May we respond with very great rejoicing to Your very great provision for our sin!

Holy God, we confess we have sinned greatly, very greatly.
Forgive us our sins, O very great God!
Yet, Your provision for our sin has been very great. You sent Your only begotten Son to die for us.
Let there be great rejoicing in our hearts! O, let us rejoice with very great rejoicing!
May Your joy be our strength!

O, Holy, Holy, Holy God, we confess we have sinned greatly and yet in Your love, mercy and grace, You provided the sin offering we could never provide: the Lord Jesus Christ, the perfect, spotless Lamb of God!

O, what kind of God are You! Holy, Holy, Holy! We were an unclean things and all of our righteousness was filthy rags! We were dead in our sins, helpless, powerless and weak. There was no intercessor. There was no mediator. There was no hope. And yet...in the fullness of time, Holy God, You provided the Lamb to die for our sin, to make us holy, to make us the righteousness of God! You were just and justifier. You are both Judge and Advocate. You are our High Priest and atoning sacrifice! We praise and thank You. We rejoice greatly in the salvation You alone could provide!

O, teach us to rejoice in the salvation You purchased for us on the cross! Even as we weep over our sin, show us Your love, mercy and grace in Jesus Christ! May we never despair over our sin, but continue to look to the cross, to look to Your full provision for all our sin. Help us to know the full assurance of the pardon You purchased for us at Calvary! May we continue to soak ourselves in Your Word and Your truth about who we are in Christ, to remind us of the work You have already accomplished once for all for us. Our sins which were once scarlet have become white as snow because the spotless Lamb became sin for us. You have cast our sins into the sea. As far as the east is from the west, so far have You removed our transgressions from us. You have said You will remember our sins no more! May we come to You unashamed, because You are not ashamed of us. May we come boldly to You and cry out, "Abba, Father!" Speak to us, Holy Spirit, write these truths in our minds and on our hearts that we are the children of God. May we rejoice in the redemption You purchased for us. May we rejoice in You, O loving, merciful and gracious God! Full atonement, can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior! Amen and Amen.

  • "not only in word" - send Your Holy Spirit so we might proclaim Your Gospel in power

I've been focusing on Nehemiah 8 and praying that the Lord might restore the Word of God to its proper place in the Church once more.

Though I've already touched on the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering God's people to proclaim the Word of God and for our understanding the Word of God, today I would like us to specifically pray for the Holy Spirit to come upon us, to work in and through us as we proclaim the Gospel as well as and to fall upon those who hear the Gospel.

    Holy God,

You who have graciously given us Your Word through Your Holy Spirit, and have entrusted Your Word to us, we confess to You that so often we want to give out Your Word without asking for Your anointing and Your power.

I Thessalonians 1:5 ... our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

Acts 10:36  As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), 37  you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38  how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Lord Jesus, if You were wholly dependent on that Holy Spirit power and You needed that anointing, how much more do we?

    Come, Holy Spirit.

O God our Father and Jesus the Son, be gracious to us, send Your Spirit to us.
Your glorious Gospel comes not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit.
We confess we have no power in and of ourselves.
We are in desperate need of Your Holy Spirit.
You have told us to ask for Your Spirit, so we come boldly to Your throne to ask for what You alone can provide.
Send Your Holy Spirit to us from on high, so, like Jesus Christ Himself, we might proclaim Your Gospel in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.
Holy Spirit, fall upon those who hear our words, as many as have been ordained to eternal life.

    Come, Holy Spirit.

How can we expect to do anything in Your Kingdom apart from asking You to baptize us afresh, to come and infuse our words as we speak and then fall upon those who hear.

Acts 10:44  While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45  And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46  For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47  “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” 48  And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.

We marvel how You used Peter, the one who was fearful and denied You three times. We thank You for this wonderful encouragement to us. Who but God can take the weakest of men and use them in such mighty ways! We confess how we have been like Peter, we confess how we have denied you and shrunk back in unbelief and fear. We praise You for the reminder that any one of us can be Your vessel, no matter how weak we are, no matter how sinful we have been, no matter what.

Be gracious to us, send Your Holy Spirit to us from on high, so, like Peter, we might proclaim Your Gospel in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.
Holy Spirit, fall upon those who hear our words, as many as have been ordained to eternal life.

    Come, Holy Spirit.

When we do sin (for we will sin, otherwise, we make You out to be a liar), lead us, Holy Spirit, to come into the light and to confess our sins to our Father that we might receive the forgiveness and cleansing You have promised us through Christ's precious blood, so we might be recommissioned to feed Christ's sheep.

We marvel at how that small band of disciples who were hiding away in that upper room, as they remained faithful in prayer, were endued with Your promised power from on high, so they could be Your witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and to the ends of the earth. We confess how often we rely on our own abilities and do not ask for Your divine empowerment, which You so long to give us. It is part of our birthright as children of God. May we bathe all we say and do in prayer. May we never cease to ask for Your Spirit. Forgive us for not asking for Your Spirit as we ought. Forgive us for being puffed up and thinking we are sufficient in and of ourselves. We are nothing and can do nothing apart from Your Holy Spirit who dwells in us forever and Whom You also choose to send to us as You will so we might be bold witnesses for You as we see happening in the book of Acts. May we remember that the Spirit blows where and when He wills. May we pray expectantly and then trust Your sovereign will and way. May we never resist Your Holy Spirit.

Send Your Holy Spirit to us from on high, so, like the disciples, we might proclaim Your Gospel in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.
Holy Spirit, fall upon those who hear our words, as many as have been ordained to eternal life.

    Come, Holy Spirit.

Holy Spirit, keep reminding us that though we should and must prepare and do all we can to ready ourselves to proclaim Your Word, the Gospel of Christ must go out not in word only, but in power and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance.

Your Gospel is the power of God unto salvation. Yet how often do we not rely on that same Gospel power when we speak to others? We confess we so often rely on our own cleverness and intellect. We confess we are tempted to maneuver and manipulate. Our own efforts, however learned, however polished, can never birth a child into the Kingdom of God.

I Corinthians 4:20 For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power.

    Paul himself recognized this:

I Corinthians 2:1  And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2  For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3  And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4  and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5  that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Forgive us, Lord. Forgive us, Holy Spirit, for grieving You. How can we expect to speak of the Lord Christ with boldness and much assurance unless Your Spirit is empowering us to do so. O, how foolish of us, not to ask for heavenly supplies when we engage in heavenly work! Forgive us, Lord God.

When we work in our own power, we may very well get decisions for Christ, but we will not get conversions. Guard us, O Lord, in this. Protect us. Stop our mouths as soon as we begin to speak in our own flesh rather than by Your Spirit. Your Spirit alone can breathe life into the dry bones. Your Spirit alone can translate souls from the kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Your Son.

Send Your Holy Spirit to us from on high, so, like Paul, we might proclaim Your Gospel in power, in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.
Holy Spirit, fall upon those who hear our words, as many as have been ordained to eternal life.

    Come, Holy Spirit.

O great God, have mercy on us,  for Jesus' sake, for without You, we can do nothing.

Brothers and sisters, please add your PRAYERS for God's Holy Spirit to fall fresh upon us and those who hear us.

  • Forgive us, Holy Spirit, for grieving You by despising the gift of Your Word

I've been focusing on Nehemiah 8 for the last several weeks in these posts/prayers:

Earlier this week in Forgive us, Holy Spirit, for grieving You, for not paying attention to Your Word
I reminded us that the Bible is God's very own words breathed out to us through His Holy Spirit, Who also inspired and carried along the writers of the Bible, and how the Holy Spirit Himself must be grieved and quenched when we do not pay attention to the Word of God as we should. Along those same lines, I'd like to return to Nehemiah 8 so we might put ourselves in the light of the Word to have the Holy Spirit might examine us and our attitudes toward God and His precious Word. I know I've covered some of these things in my previous posts, but believe we should return there again today.

Father, Son and Spirit, as we open Your Word and consider Your Word to us now, we know we have no vision and insight apart from Your opening our eyes and showing us the truth about ourselves. We ask You would send Your Holy Spirit to discern the thoughts and intents of our hearts toward You and Your Word, particularly in light of the example of the Israelites here in Nehemiah 8. Open our eyes and ears and hearts to hear and see and receive from You now. We pray also that You would help us especially be taking time to prepare ourselves to hear Your Word this week in worship. And for those out there who will be teaching or preaching, we pray You would guard and protect them as they seek Your face and prepare to give out Your Word to Your flock. May Your Spirit fill them and empower them so Your Word go out with boldness and assurance. Amen.

Nehemiah 8:1  And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the LORD had commanded Israel.

Lord God, we see how Your people gathered together and asked that Your Word be read in the time of Nehemiah.
We confess how we so often gather together as Your Church and we have no interest in having Your Word read.
We confess that we often do not even ask to have Your Word read, but settle for cheap substitutes.
We confess we do not love You and Your Word as we ought.

We confess we do not have the interest in Your Word as we ought.
We confess we have grieved You, Holy Spirit,
Forgive us, Holy Spirit, for grieving You by despising the gift of Your Word.
Holy Father, cleanse us from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son.

O, to whom shall we go? You alone have the Words of life.
Increase our love for You and Your Word so we will not settle for lesser things.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

2  So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.

Lord God, we see how Your people gathered together and made Your Word primary and central.
We confess how often we have grieved You, Holy Spirit, because we have not made Your Word primary and central.
We confess that we read from so many other books, we listen to so many other words.
We confess that we do not give You and Your Word the preeminent place in our gatherings.

We confess we have not made Your Word primary and central as we ought.
We confess we have grieved You, Holy Spirit.
Forgive us, Holy Spirit, for grieving You by despising the gift of Your Word.
Holy Father, cleanse us from all unrighteousness by the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son.

O, to whom shall we go? You alone have the Words of life.
Give us a desire to make Your Word primary and central as we ought.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

3  And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand.

Lord God, we see how Your people gathered together and listened to Your Word for hours on end.
We confess how when we gather together we don't listen to Your Word for a few minutes, if that.
We confess that we do not give You and Your Word the preeminent place in our churches and in our lives.

We confess we do not listen to Your Word as we often as we ought.

Increase our hunger to hear Your Word and open our ears to hear Your Word.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

4  And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah on his right hand, and Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam on his left hand. 5  And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people...

Lord God, we see how Your Word was lifted up to its rightful place because Your Word stands alone for You stand alone.
We confess how when we gather together we do not lift up You or Your Word to the rightful place.
We confess how our eyes are on all other things but You and Your Word as we gather together.
We confess how in many churches today Your Word is not even opened up in the sight of all the people.

We confess we have not given You and Your Word the rightful place – above all people, above all other books.

Humble us so we might reverence You and Your Word and give You and Your Word the rightful place and open up Your Word in our churches.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

5 ...as he opened it all the people stood. 6  And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

Lord God, we see how Your people gave the glory and honor due to You and to Your Word.
We confess how we often do not give You and Your Word the glory and honor we ought.
We confess how we often do not see You as high and lifted up and holy and Your Word as holy.
We confess how we often come to You and Your Word too casually and have little or no sense of reverence.

We confess we have not given the glory and honor due to You and to Your Word.

Humble us so we might give You and Your Word due glory, honor, and reverence.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

7  Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law while the people remained in their places. 8  They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.

Lord God, we see how Your appointed leaders helped Your people understand Your Word.
We confess how so many of our leaders and we ourselves sometimes do not help Your people to understand Your Word but bring confusion.

We confess we often bring confusion rather than understanding to Your people.

Give us eyes to see and a heart for the sheep who are in need of clear teaching and understanding of Your Word.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

7  ...while the people remained in their places.

Lord God, we see how Your people remained in their places as Your Word was read and taught.
We confess how often our attention wanders and wanes as we hear Your Word read and taught.

We confess though we may remain in our places, our hearts and minds wander and wane and we do not remain attentive to Your Word.

Increase our appetite and hunger for You and Your Word, so our hearts and minds might remain fixed on You and Your Word.
We thank You, Holy Spirit, for the gift of Scripture to us.
    May we not despise it.

"he called it the tent of meeting..."

I am burdened to pray to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the reformation and reviving of Christ's church.

The phrase tent of meeting comes from Exodus 33:7: Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

This site is devoted to God first and foremost. In all that is done here, my prayer is that God is glorified and His Name magnified and Christ and Him crucified is lifted up so He might be preeminent and God might receive all the praise, honor and glory due His Holy Name. All who have come to a saving knowledge of our Father by grace through faith in the all-sufficient sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are welcome to enter this tent of meeting to seek the Lord.

This blog is a place for all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to come and seek God's face for revival. My intention is for this tent of meeting to be a holy place where we can enter into PRAYER together to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit leads you, please enter into prayer either here (think of "comments" as prayers) or on your own.

Habakkuk 3:2 O LORD, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O LORD, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.
