After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
31 Then Jesus said to them, You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written,
32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you to Galilee.
33 Peter answered him, Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.
34 Jesus said to him, Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.
35 Peter said to him, Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you! And all the disciples said the same.
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, Sit here, while I go over there and pray. 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me. 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will. 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done. 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.
Our Father,
We confess how often we are like Peter and the disciples. We resolve to follow You. We make promises. We say, "Thy will be done," but the next thing we know the cock is crowing. We have denied you. We have not followed through on Your will. We have been afraid or we have let worldly concerns choke out Your Kingdom which is growing in us. We have begun to walk in the flesh rather than Your Spirit.
How we long to be like Your Son, Jesus Christ, who perfectly submitted Himself to Your will. He followed You perfectly. He prayed, "Thy will be done," and there was no backtracking or backsliding. Jesus constantly relied upon and walked in the power of Your Spirit. He lived a life of perfect submission to You.
Because we have received Your Son and believed on His Name, we are Your children and His joint heirs . . .
You have credited our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as righteousness.
You have forgiven our sins because He shed His blood to atone for our sins.
You have sprinkled clean water on us and saved us from all iniquities and all our idols.
You have taken our stony hearts and given us new hearts, hearts of flesh.
You have circumcised our hearts by the circumcision of Christ so we might love you with all our heart.
You have given us a different spirit so we might follow you fully like Caleb.
You have given us Your Holy Spirit so we might follow You fully like Jesus.
You have put your laws into our minds and written them on our hearts.
You have given us Your word so we might be sanctified to You.
You have put Your Spirit within us who causes us to will and to do of Your good pleasure.
You have given us Your Holy Spirit who cries, "Abba, Father, not my will but Yours be done."
You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of love, power and a sound mind.
You have baptized us with Your Holy Spirit so we might be Your witnesses to the end of the earth.
Father in heaven and God the Son,
Continue to pour out Your promised Spirit on us,
We are helpless to pray "Thy will be done" apart from Your Spirit crying from within us,
We cannot present ourselves to You as living sacrifices apart from Your Spirit rendering an obedient Spirit in us.
Holy Spirit, work in us, burn away any unholy desires in those deepest, darkest hidden parts of our souls, so we might present ourselves wholly to God, for that is our reasonable service and spiritual worship.
O, Holy Father,
Since Your Son suffered in the flesh to bring us to You,
Since He was victorious over sin and death,
Since He is now He is seated at Your right hand,
Since all things are now subject to Him,
Since we now have His resurrection Spirit indwelling us
May we arm ourselves with His mind, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so we might now live for the rest of our time in the flesh no longer for our own human passions and lusts but for Your will alone, O Father. May You work in us so we might pray like Your Son, "Not my will, but Yours be done."
We have spent enough of our lives living for our own human passions and lusts.
You have redeemed us and we are no longer our own,
You have redeemed us so we might no longer live for ourselves but live for You,
You have redeemed us so we might no longer live to do our own will but to submit ourselves to Your will.
We are not our own, but have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
You have loosed our bonds so we might render ourselves wholly to you, O Lord.
Might our wills be perfectly melted into Yours.
May we no longer be conformed to this world but may You transform our minds so we might prove what is Your good, acceptable and perfect will, so we might be truly able to pray as Your Son taught us:
and be able to pray to our Father without reservation or hesitation,
"Thy will be done."
