  • "Is it not written...?" Mark 11:15 | the Biblical means of revival

Mark 11:15  And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16  And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17  And he was teaching them and saying to them, “IS IT NOT WRITTEN, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.”

Most of us are familiar with this account of Jesus' grief over and rebuke of the state of temple worship. It's also repeated in the gospels of Matthew and Luke, but I really like the phrasing here:

    Is it not written...?

Do you see where Israel had gone wrong?

They had not taken heed to what was written.

Is this not the Godhead's very same loving plea to His Church, His people, today:

    Is it not written...?

This has been our God's merciful and gracious call to His people at all times, including those times when the Church has been in decline and is in sore need of reformation. Is it not His call to His people today as in so many places we have lost our way for we have discounted, marginalized and minimized the word of God, we have not guarded the precious Gospel of Jesus Christ, we have not been vigilant and we have allowed error and heresies and evil men and impostors to creep in and grow and deceive and overthrow the faith of some. We have neglected to take heed to what has been written – God's very own words breathed out to us through His Holy Spirit. His words have been preserved for us for our daily sustenance as we live the Christian life in a fallen world and as we are sent out on mission to take the Gospel of repentance and remission of sins to lost souls in all the nations to the end of the earth.

    Is it not written...?

Church of God, may our God have mercy on us and open our ears to ear what the Spirit is saying to us:

    Is it not written...?

As we have played God and usurped God's rightful place in our attempts to try to grow and restore and renew the Church by relying on our own abilities and resources, as we have gone in seek of help to any and all places but to God Himself and His word, may our God be kind to us and lead us to repentance and turn us away from ourselves and our ways and turn us once again to Him and His word.

    Is it not written...?

We have relied on the schemes and wisdom and power and strength of men. We have often gone so far astray from the Biblical mandates, from the basic and effectual and vital means God has given us for restoration and revival in the Church, which we find very early on, as the apostles proclaimed:

But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.

So many have looked at the Church and have seen a great lack, but they've not gone to seek the face of God in the word of God and His means to revive and renew the Church.

...should not a people inquire of their God?

Of course, this is nothing new, we've seen this happen in Biblical history and in Church history since that time.

Isn't this where we go all wrong in our desire for reformation and revival in the Church? Instead of looking to our God, instead of looking back to what God has already revealed to us in His infallible and unchanging and living word, we look around anywhere and everywhere else.

Prayer and ministry of the word place us wholly dependent on the sovereign God and His mercies. Our flesh balks at being wholly dependent, but that is and has always been God's intent for His people, so He alone would get all the praise, honor and glory. We cannot control how and when and where He might choose to pour His Spirit and revive us. But as we use the means He provides – prayer and ministry of the word – and as we work in the power He provides, we can trust God will bring the increase in His time.

  • Open our eyes once again to see Your return (Isaiah 52:7-10)

    Isaiah 52
7 How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,
    who publishes salvation,
who says to Zion, "Your God reigns."
    8 The voice of your watchmen—they lift up their voice;
    together they sing for joy;
for eye to eye they see
the return of the LORD to Zion.
9 Break forth together into singing,
    you waste places of Jerusalem,
    for the LORD has comforted his people;
    he has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The LORD has bared his holy arm
before the eyes of all the nations,
and all the ends of the earth shall see
    the salvation of our God.

    LORD,

    We are watchmen.
    We have seen Your return.
We have seen Your Spirit's moving.
We have felt Your holy fire burning.
    We have been blessed.
But now our vision has been clouded.
    We have become distracted.
    We have become stagnant.
    We have become lukewarm.
We have not been good stewards of Your blessings.

Forgive us, Lord, for not being zealous for You as we ought.
Forgive us, Lord, for not persevering in prayer to You as we ought.
Forgive us, Lord, for not watching for You as we ought.
Forgive us, Lord, for not speaking for You as we ought.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so our feet might be beautiful and bring good news.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might publish peace, good news of happiness and salvation.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might say to Your people: "Your God reigns."

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might lift up our voice together and sing for joy.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might break forth into singing.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might make known Your holy arm before all the nations.

Open our eyes once again to see Your return,
so we might make visible to all the ends of the earth Your salvation.

Please add your PRAYERS as His Spirit leads you.

  • You have performed Your words, For You are righteous. (Nehemiah 9:8)

Yesterday I was rereading in Nehemiah 9 with the intent to continue on after my last post/prayer on Nehemiah 9:1-3 by focusing on how the leaders of the people led the way in confession of sin during corporate worship. I began reading . . .

    Nehemiah 9 (NKJV)
4 Then Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani stood on the stairs of the Levites and cried out with a loud voice to the LORD their God. 5 And the Levites, Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said:

“Stand up and bless the LORD your God
          Forever and ever!

          “Blessed be Your glorious name,
Which is exalted above all blessing and praise!

     6 You alone are the LORD;
          You have made heaven,
The heaven of heavens, with all their host,
The earth and everything on it,
The seas and all that is in them,
          And You preserve them all.
The host of heaven worships You.

7 “You are the LORD God,
          Who chose Abram,
And brought him out of Ur of the Chaldeans,
          And gave him the name Abraham;

8 You found his heart faithful before You,
And made a covenant with him
To give the land of the Canaanites,
          The Hittites, the Amorites,
          The Perizzites, the Jebusites,
          And the Girgashites—
To give it to his descendants.
          You have performed Your words,
          For You are righteous.

That last phrase in verse 8 caught my eye and my heart:

    You have performed Your words,
          For You are righteous.

I've written about God's calling to me to pray for revival and starting up tent of meeting most recently here, and at greater length here. If you are relatively new to tent of meeting, I would encourage you to read those posts.

Today just as the leaders of Israel did in Nehemiah 9, I would like to cry out with a loud voice to the Lord my God, to bless Him and His glorious Name for how He has performed His words to me in this calling for He is righteous.

    You alone are the Lord!
You have made the heavens and the earth and all that is in them.
    You preserve them all.
LORD God, I want to bless You and bless Your glorious Name today and forever and ever.
You alone are the Lord! You are the LORD God.
You have performed Your words, For You are righteous.
You have worked immeasurably above all I could have asked or imagined.
The God who called me has been faithful. You have surely done it! Glory to God!

    You alone are the Lord!
You have formed me and given me breath.
But then You breathed new life into me by Your Spirit.

You chose me to be Your child.
But then You called me to intercede for Your Church.

You called me to intercede for Your Church,
Yet I had no desire to do so, but You put it on my heart, You gave me the desire.

You know how I have fumbled and stumbled in this calling.
Apart from You I could do nothing. You persevered with me so I might persevere in this calling.

You kept me coming back to Your throne of grace,
Despite my disenchantment, doubt, loneliness and weariness.

You called others to intercede for Your Church.
They have come alongside me to encourage me.

You renewed my strength when I was weak. You turned my eyes back to the ruins.
How could I give You rest so long as Your Church is a reproach to Your Name and not a praise in the earth?
LORD God, I want to bless You and bless Your glorious Name today and forever and ever.
You alone are the Lord! You are the LORD God.
You have performed Your words, For You are righteous.
You have worked immeasurably above all I could have asked or imagined.
The God who called me has been faithful. You have surely done it! Glory to God!

    You alone are the Lord!
You opened up the heavens to me in ways I could not imagine.
Prayer has begun to become sweet communion and a joy to my heart.

How can I not tarry in prayer alongside You in the heavenly places?
Jesus, Great High Priest, You ever live to intercede for us. O, continue to melt my will into Yours, Sovereign Lord.

Ah, LORD God, what kind of God are You?
    You alone are the Lord.
You are the God who calls us and then works in us the calling.
We are faithful only because You are faithful. Preserve us here, Lord.
LORD God, I want to bless You and bless Your glorious Name today and forever and ever.
Truly You have performed Your words, for You are righteous!
You have worked immeasurably above all I could have asked or imagined.
The God who called me has been faithful. You have surely done it! Glory to God!

As the Spirit leads you, please add your praises to the Lord for His faithfulness to you to perform His words.

"he called it the tent of meeting..."

I am burdened to pray to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ for the reformation and reviving of Christ's church.

The phrase tent of meeting comes from Exodus 33:7: Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp.

This site is devoted to God first and foremost. In all that is done here, my prayer is that God is glorified and His Name magnified and Christ and Him crucified is lifted up so He might be preeminent and God might receive all the praise, honor and glory due His Holy Name. All who have come to a saving knowledge of our Father by grace through faith in the all-sufficient sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ are welcome to enter this tent of meeting to seek the Lord.

This blog is a place for all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to come and seek God's face for revival. My intention is for this tent of meeting to be a holy place where we can enter into PRAYER together to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, as the Holy Spirit leads you, please enter into prayer either here (think of "comments" as prayers) or on your own.

Habakkuk 3:2 O LORD, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O LORD, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.
